Three in Six

What does this headline mean? Borg reference? Not quite, but sometimes in the SC State Senate resistance can be futile. No this blog is about the people running for State Senate District 6, which is a wide reaching section of Greenville county stretching from Travelers Rest to the north side of the City of Greenville. It has long been the political fiefdom of Mike Fair.

Fair has been the state Senator for the district since 1995. Before that he was the State House rep from 1984 to 1995. And before that he was the County Councilman from 1976 to 1982. And way before that he was a star football player at Parker High School in the 1960s before going to the University of South Carolina to play quarterback.

However, he has angered a lot of people a long the way with his sometimes extremely hard right views on all things Conservatism. He has battled evolution in the classroom. He has battled sex education. He has battled homosexuality. And since he has been in office so long, he makes more than $30,000 a year because he gets a state pension. The normal rate for a state senator is $10,400.

All of this is to say that it is no surprise that two men have opened up campaigns to defeat Fair.

This includes former State Highway Commission Chariman Johnny Edwards, who is not to be confused with former presidential candidate John Edwards. He has a little more than $9,200 in the bank for his campaign and has hired Edward C. Marshall as his campaign manager.

The third person in this battle is William R. Timmons, a deputy solicitor from Greenville, who has a website photo that needs to be seen to be believed. Seriously, what the hell is going on there? Furman at sunset is so over the top that it may just work. You know what may work more? He has more than $130,000 in his campaign fund. That is a lot of money. Now $100,000 is from a loan, but he has a lot of old Greenville money throwing, um, money at him.
