The lead in the County Council District 21 race could be Stacy Kuper's after a very strong showing at a Greenville Chamber political forum Friday morning.
That is not saying the race is over, but based on the nods of heads of approval, she appeared to be scoring more political points than her opponents, Rick Roberts and Lance Byars. All three are running for the seat being vacated by Jim Burns, who is stepping down after 12 years on Council. All three are Republicans as is Burns.
Kuper scored strong points for her vision on traffic and job growth, but her big ticket idea was the future use of Greenville County Square. While Roberts and Byars agreed that the best use of the site is new commercial use and that moving county offices from there was feasible, Kuper came out with a more developed plan.
It included looking for ways to consolidate county services using technology, creating smaller satellite offices in various parts of the county where residents can go to perform basic services and functions and potentially moving the key offices to the former Liberty Life complex on Wade Hampton Boulevard, where it would be more centrally located.
Grand planning was a key of Kuper's topics as she addressed the need for critical and out of the box thinking on how first responders can better communicate, infrastructure and meeting the needs of the community.
The three will meet again Thursday night at Greer's Cannon Center as part of a larger forum. It will be interesting to see if Roberts or Byars can close the gap then.
