The Redistricting Question

In light of the major upsets in several state Senate races, many members of the Upstate media have been trying to piece together how and why many of them happened. The best we have seen, though, comes from The Greenville News today. Basically, the piece surmises correctly that the state legislator’s constant tampering with political lines has cost some of them jobs.

Case in point was Lee Bright, who worked to remove a problem Spartanburg district and added just enough of Greenville that he thought it would never hurt him. Looks like he was wrong. The biggest concern, though, is that he did it. State laws strongly state not to move over county boundaries. Bright, apparently didn’t care and got away with it. Until now.

But it begs the question of redistricting. Have you ever looked at the maps for Greenville County? They are ridiculous. Lines are drawn like a crack addled graphics arts major did them. It will be interesting to see what happens in four years the next time the state goes through the process.
