Push comes to shove on Airbnb in Greenville

Here is one to watch in the coming weeks. The City of Greenville is trying to crack down on Airbnb, which is a way many people supplement their income. Basically, people rent out rooms in their homes to out-of-town visitors. This has been going on nationally for quite some time and is part of the so-called new economy based on sharing.

Well, hotel groups don’t like because it is cutting into their bottom line. And they have a valid, very valid reason to be upset. They are spending millions on new construction, hiring people and helping grow Greenville. Yet, a guy with a Fonzie-style garage can beat them to the punch with cheaper rates.

A public meeting on the issue set for this week was postponed, and the word is a large group of young professionals from across the city are getting ready to put pressure on the City Council to not be so draconian on Airbnb.

It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
